Text: The American Republic Since 1877 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces to the student a survey of the major events, persons, trends, and ideas of American history from 1877 to the present, with emphasis on analyzing and understanding the causes and the effects of events that have impacted the nation. The student will develop an understanding of how the past influences the present and the future. Historical imagination will also be implemented to compare levels of thoughts and solutions to the past. Throughout the course, the five themes of geography will be applied to enhance the understanding of American history. In addition, the course is also designed for the student to develop critical thinking skills, formulate hands-on activities, problem solving, and simulations to enhance the learning process. There will be an emphasis on the writing process. A research analysis of a historical event is required. Learning With A Purpose: The Overview On a daily basis, we will be investigating and learning about the history of the United States since 1877 to the present. The date 1877 signifies the end of Reconstruction or the rebuilding of the South after the Civil War. We will study events by analyzing them and understand how this country has evolved and changed over time, and how these events and changes affect you. We will see the effect a single person can have on the course of a nation. We will see how a single event can begin a series of other events with significant effects on the future. Finally, we will see how events have evolved the United States into a world power it has grown to be. |
